We’re officially in retrograde season.
Right now, Pluto, Neptune, and Saturn are all retrograde – and Mercury joins the party on Thursday, July 17. (Yes, it’s that time again.)
If just reading that list makes your eye twitch a little, you’re not alone. Retrogrades tend to get a dramatic reputation. Mercury retrograde, in particular, is often blamed for everything from tech snafus to awkward texts to existential crises.
But here’s the thing:
Retrogrades aren’t out to get you.
They’re not the villain in your story – they’re actually sacred invitations. Invitations to pause, reflect, recalibrate, and revisit what’s asking for your attention.
Just like when you’re driving and pass someone on the freeway and, for a moment, it looks like they’re moving backward – planets in retrograde only appear to be reversing from our perspective on Earth. That’s why the retrograde experience often brings a sense of slowing down, turning inward, or going back over old ground.
But you’re not actually moving backward.
You’re becoming more aligned.
And that illusion of going backward? That’s one of the most powerful lessons retrograde season offers:
Moving backwards in life is just that – an illusion. You’re not behind. You’re being given a second pass. A clearer lens.
What Does a Retrograde Really Mean?
Each planet has its own domain:
- Mercury = mind, communication, technology
- Saturn = structure, time, discipline, responsibility
- Neptune = dreams, intuition, imagination, illusions
- Pluto = transformation, power, truth, shadow
When a planet goes retrograde, we get a chance to reflect on how we’re engaging with that archetype in our own lives. Are we in alignment? Are we avoiding something? Are we ready to reimagine how we relate to this part of ourselves and the world?
One of the side effects of retrogrades – especially outer planet retrogrades – is that a transit can last longer than usual. A Saturn transit that might usually be a month can stretch to five months or more. That can leave us feeling like we’re stuck, or wondering, “Why is this taking so long?”
But sometimes, it’s the review process itself that’s the magic.
We humans tend to think going back means something went wrong.
But reworking, editing, deepening, and refining are all necessary parts of mastery.
So… What Should You Do?
There’s nothing to “do” during a retrograde that isn’t wise to do every day:
- Double-check before you send the email.
- Pause before reacting.
- Speak with kindness and clarity.
- Reflect before making big commitments.
- Listen more deeply – especially to yourself.
And above all, don’t believe everything you think (seriously).
You are always creating meaning.
Make sure that meaning is empowering.
Astrology is a Mirror, Not a Mandate
If we’re using astrology as a spiritual tool – not superstition – then retrogrades are part of our growth. They’re built-in pauses in the rhythm of life. They remind us to step back, zoom out, and tend to what matters.
Whether you’re in the thick of a personal transformation or just trying to survive Mercury’s latest trickster dance, let this season be a time of sacred noticing.
The planets are not punishing you.
They’re whispering: “Look again. There’s something here for you.”
